What is Fibre Broadband

So what is fibre optic broadband?

Fibre optic cables are thinner than a strand of human hair, and within broadband networks, provide connectivity to end users. This cable is capable of carrying large amounts of traffic, enabling users to achieve faster download and upload speeds.

Passive Optical Networks

A Passive Optical Network (PON) is a fibre-optic network that uses unpowered optical splitters, usually located in external closures or streetside cabinets, to distribute internet data from a single fibre link to multiple users—such as homes and businesses—creating a point-to-multipoint system. This centralised architecture improves reliability and reflects a robust, well-engineered design.

PONs support two-way traffic on different wavelengths: typically, one for upstream (user-to-provider) and another for downstream (provider-to-user). This wavelength-division multiplexing allows efficient, simultaneous data transfer and explains how PON enables bidirectional communication.

Key advantages:

Low cost: Reduced deployment costs because fewer active electronic devices are required.

Higher bandwidth: Supports technologies such as GPON (around 1 Gbit/s) and XGS-PON (up to 10 Gbit/s symmetric).

Multi Dwelling (MDU) Solutions

We work with residents and landlords to install the proper infrastructure in their buildings, giving tenants faster internet, moving them away from outdated copper solutions, and delivering next-generation connectivity with speeds up to 10 Gbps symmetrical. At TNS Connectivity Solutions, we believe in partnering with residents and landlords to provide high-quality services—not just broadband, but also security solutions that work for everyone.

Rural Broadband

Rural communities suffer from slow broadband and are often last on the list of many internet service providers due to costs. TNS Connectivity Solutions can assist rural communities with faster internet speeds, capable of delivering Gigabit speeds, subject to survey. We have proven technology to support rural areas using hybrid solutions combining fibre optics and fixed wireless access. Farmers and rural communities can benefit from our product range, and we focus on engaging with the community to build trust and ensure everyone benefits from faster internet, moving away from slow copper lines.

Business Parks & Managed Office Solutions

Business parks and managed office solutions are central to the technology we deploy. We partner with business park owners to design and implement solutions that enhance both the value and appeal of their parks and managed office workspaces.

For tenants, this means faster, more reliable internet access. For the business park, it enables additional features such as IP CCTV, door access control, and enterprise-grade wireless networks, helping to ensure that properties are secure and well-connected.

While many business parks still depend on traditional structured cabling, much of this infrastructure is outdated. By upgrading to fibre, park owners can unlock a wide range of new services and capabilities, effectively future-proofing their sites.
